Heritage Mappilai Samba Rice, also known as “Bridegroom Rice,” is a traditional native rice variety distinguished by its natural red color and predominantly grown in Tamil Nadu, South India. This indigenous heritage grain has been cultivated for generations and is appreciated for its earthy flavor, hearty texture, and important place in traditional Tamil cuisine.

Mappilai Samba is particularly well suited to organic and traditional farming practices because it is a hardy rice variety that can be cultivated with little or no fertilizer or pesticide inputs. It is a long-duration crop, typically requiring approximately 160 days to mature. Today, this traditional variety is preserved and cultivated by a relatively small number of farmers committed to maintaining indigenous rice varieties and traditional agricultural practices.
